Helping Your Child Become a Music Lover

Music is everywhere––in the classroom, in the car, in shopping malls, on TV–––and this is why it’s easy for children to listen to music and memorize song lyrics. For children, the benefit of music is even bigger than memorization, as melody and rhythm help in mental growth as well as creative stimulation. With so many advantages, parents should strive to involve their kids in musical activities. Here are some simple ways to encourage your kids to love music.

Have Basic Music Knowledge

Before teaching children any songs or musical instruments, parents should at least have some basic music knowledge. This knowledge is important for helping your child understand an instrument they’re learning or music they’re playing. Start with songs with simple tunes and easy-to-follow lyrics.

If your child is taking interest in a musical instrument, take time yourself to research that specific instrument to educate yourself and your child on its ins and outs. Even if you don’t have a musical background, our teachers can advise you on how to help your child practice at home.

Get Your Child Involved In Music Lessons With Other Children

Children love interacting with people who are just like them, so why not consider involving your child in group music lessons with other children? While children are young, music shouldn’t be so serious or revolve around laborious practicing––it should be fun! If music learning becomes too serious, your child is more likely to become bored and tired along the way.

At The Music Room, we offer group music lessons to help your child learn, socialize, and enjoy learning music in a nurturing environment made for children with their same interests.

Teach Your Your Child With Musical Games

Musical games are a common mnemonic device that you can find in any elementary school classroom. Music helps improve memory, enhance cognitive skills, and melodies can help us recall important images and information. Maybe next time you put your groceries away, you can make a little rhyme-y jingle about the groceries you’re putting away, or come up with a fun song about doing chores—there really is no limit! Singing in elementary school is an ongoing activity that is constantly being integrated into children’s activities. The secret is finding out how to integrate music into your child’s daily routine.

Attend Your Child’s Performances

Children feed off of the approval of their parents and caregivers, so attending your child’s seemingly minor musical performances is huge. Your attendance shows your child that you’re proud of them, and enjoy listening to them play music. This is a huge confidence boost for your child, and will result in a deeper love and appreciation for music as they grow up.

After all, you’re your child’s number one fan, and they want you to be proud of them. Show them that you are!
