What Is The Music Room?

Music is there for all of the firsts in our lives––heartbreaks, first dances, weddings and parties––it’s a way to express ourselves, our feelings, and our thoughts. Music accompanies and communicates our most precious moments, profound pains, and our greatest joys. At The Music Room, we believe that music is not only essential to the human experience, but also to the growth and development of children. We believe that everyone can benefit from having music in their lives.

Who We Are

The Music Room has been providing music lessons to people of all ages and abilities in the Greater Birmingham Area since 2012. We aim to promote the emotional, intellectual, and therapeutic value of music in the lives of both children and adults through lessons, neuro-inclusive music programs, and community programs.

Music Lessons

Young beginners all the way to senior citizens can enjoy professional music lessons taught by our highly qualified instructors. Our private and group lessons include piano, guitar, percussion, and voice. Though we can’t say exactly how long it’ll take to learn a musical instrument, with regular practice, you can achieve a basic level of playing in just a few months.

For younger students, we suggest that they are at least 6 years old for piano and drum lessons, at least 7 years old for guitar and ukulele, and at least 8 years old for voice lessons.

Music As Therapy

We designed our neuro-inclusive programs to meet the needs of individuals who are not considered to be “neurotypical” (i.e., Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down Syndrome) who may benefit from a modified music program to address learning and sensory needs that a private lesson would not accomodate. Our neurodiverse students are incredibly gifted, and we believe that the benefits of music education exceeds the mastery of any one instrument. We offer two programs for our neurodiverse students: Drum Therapy and Keys to the Soul.

Drum Therapy is a percussion-based neuro-inclusive program that improves coordination, sensory integration, cognitive skills, and motor skills. Drum therapy has also shown improved self-esteem and social skills.

Keys to the Soul is our piano-based program that also improves coordination, sensory integration, cognitive development, and motor skills. Our piano program is designed for students with learning differences that may not be accommodated in regular, private piano lessons. Students consistently surprise their parents with how much they’re capable of musically.

Community Programs

In addition to our studio lessons, we partner with other organizations and schools to provide special needs music programs. We focus our community programs toward disadvantaged groups with physical and developmental disabilities. They focus on improving social skills, motor skills, and getting children involved in music education in a way that’s engaging and enjoyable.

Some of our community program partnerships include:

The Arc of Central Alabama & Arcway--Three days a week, we get to “bring the party” and have some musical fun with the folks at The Arc of Central Alabama and Arcway!
