Our Story

The Music Room has been providing music lessons and programs to individuals and families in the Greater Birmingham since its establishment in 2012. Our focus is to promote the emotional, intellectual, and therapeutic value of music in the lives of both children and adults. 

Our experienced instructors offer beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons in piano, guitar, percussion, and voice. We also offer several music therapy programs, as well as a variety of community programs.  Don’t hesitate to contact us at any time, or better yet, drop in and say hello!

Our Staff


Mark Lucas —Owner, Percussion, Guitar

Mark Lucas is an accomplished musician, award winning lyricist and expert percussionist. Mark was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. His father, a guitarist, was able to recognize and encourage Mark’s natural musical abilities early, allowing Mark to begin to hone his musical abilities at a young age.

In high school, Mark won multiple songwriting and musical fine arts competitions, and he was also an active member of the marching band. At 18 years old, Mark was signed to Tate Music Group to record a full-length album with his band Spero.

After high school, Mark went on to study percussion performance in college and has written for and recorded with multiple bands. During college he traveled to Redding, California to study music and work with Bethel church. While in Redding, Mark played and recorded with Jesus Culture, Jeremy Riddle and Brian Johnson.

With more than 14 years experience, Mark is an accomplished percussionist, guitarist and songwriter. Mark holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts with a concentration in Music from Jacksonville State University, and he is currently a certified Drum Therapist.


Jessica Lucas Stone — Co Owner, Program Director

Along with her brother Mark Lucas, Jessica Stone opened The Music Room in November 2014 in hopes to create an outlet for music and the arts to thrive in their hometown of Leeds, Alabama. Jessica’s appreciation for music arose from her first love—dance.
With more than twenty years of dance experience, she has instructed dance for several years and was a member of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Blazerette Dance Team.
Jessica holds a Bachelor’s Degree and an Alabama License in Social Work. Here at The Music Room, Jessica serves as the Program Director and Coordinator.

Jim Lucas — Voice, Acting, Guitar

Jim Lucas has decades of experience in radio, voiceover and acting. Having written, produced, acted in, and shot over 1000 commercials, Jim is one of the most experienced on-air personalities in the Birmingham Area. If you’ve ever listened to the radio or watched TV in the Birmingham area, you’ve almost certainly heard some of his work!

Jim graduated from Samford University with a degree in Broadcast and Marketing. After graduation, he transitioned into a role as an on-air personality for Birmingham Radio stations—doing everything from morning shows to commercials and traffic reports! After a career in radio, Jim worked with the nation’s largest automotive advertiser, Intermark Group—commonly doing voiceovers, commercial production, and on screen acting for dealerships across the nation. Along with national advertising and voiceovers, you can hear Jim each Saturday on 94.1 The River.

In his spare time, Jim teaches classes at The Music Room to those interested in guitar, voice, voice-over, and acting classes.


India Dyer — Art, Piano, Guitar

Ms. Dyer graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Science in Art, and a Master of Education in Art Education. She is also certified to teach English as a Second Language. In recent years, Ms. Dyer has devoted time to tutoring reading and math skills to elementary and middle school students in the area. In addition to her love of lifelong learning, Ms. Dyer also has a strong interest and enjoyment in music. She has taken several years of piano lessons, and one semester of private guitar and private voice lessons in college. In her church congregation, she played piano for the contemporary service for several years. Ms. Dyer enjoys playing songs by ear on piano and guitar, as well as listening to other musicians share their music.


Anna Warner – Voice, Flute, Piano

A music major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Anna has played the flute for 10 years and was Band Captain in the Pride of the Greenwave Marching Band. She is currently a member of the UAB Marching Blazers. In her high school marching band and indoor drumline, she played the marimba and xylophone, which she has been playing for 7 years. In the Leeds Symphonic Band, she played the flute and marimba. In the Leeds Jazz Band, she played the piano. She was also a guest accompanist for the choirs at Leeds High School. Anna has been classically trained in voice and was a soloist soprano in all 3 choirs at Leeds High School: Emerald Voices, Leeds Chorale, and Leeds Chamber Choir. She is currently in the UAB Choir. Anna is also in a band of her own, Stairway Acoustics.



Alaina is a Psychology major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who truly believes in the potential of music to educate, shape, illuminate, and heal the lives of individuals everywhere. Studies have shown that the benefits of musical training extend beyond just the ability to play and read music. Musical training can increase IQ, verbal skills, fine motor skills, reading ability, academic performance, executive functioning, and more. Musical training provides an avenue to develop your mind while simultaneously having a fantastic time!
Alaina has been involved in various aspects of vocal performance for over fourteen years, and has been a member of several choirs, musical theatre productions, and praise teams. She also spent several years playing percussion while in public school, and took piano lessons as a child.
